Vesna

Formation and Early Years

Vesna, an all-female folk band from the Czech Republic, was formed in 2016 by frontwoman Patricie Kaňok Fuxová, who envisioned a group that celebrated femininity and Slavic sisterhood. The initial lineup included Fuxová, violinist Bára Juránková, flutists Andrea Šulcová and Tanita Yankova, the latter hailing from Bulgaria. Although the band is often categorized under Czech folk music, Fuxová has expressed that their music transcends traditional folklore, focusing instead on contemporary themes and personal narratives.

Key Releases and Lineup Changes

In 2018, the band released their debut album, "Pátá bohyně" ("The Fifth Goddess"), which drew inspiration from real-life experiences and Czech folklore. This album earned them the Discovery of the Year award at the Ceny Anděl music awards. That same year, Juránková, Šulcová, and Yankova departed, leading to the introduction of Russian pianist Olesya Ochepovskaya and Czech drummer Markéta Vedralová into the lineup. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the band expanded to include Slovak bassist Tereza Čepková and began working on their second album, "Anima," which explores themes of animal motifs and gender dynamics.

Eurovision and Recent Developments

Vesna gained international recognition when they represented the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with their song "My Sister's Crown," finishing in the top ten with a score of 129 points. This performance marked a significant milestone in their career, showcasing their unique blend of folk influences and contemporary sound to a global audience. As they continue to evolve, Vesna remains a prominent figure in the Czech music scene, pushing the boundaries of folk music while celebrating their cultural heritage.
