Victor Garber

Early Life

Victor Garber was born on March 16, 1949, in London, Ontario, Canada, to a family of Russian-Jewish descent. His father, Joseph Garber, and mother, Bessie Hope Wolf, who was an actress and singer, nurtured his artistic inclinations from a young age. Garber began acting at the age of nine and honed his skills through programs at the Grand Theatre and later at the University of Toronto. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 12, he has managed his condition throughout his career, becoming an advocate for diabetes awareness.

Career

Garber's career in music began in 1967 when he formed the folk group The Sugar Shoppe, which achieved moderate success in Canada, including a hit with "Canada". The group performed on notable television shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. His theatrical career took off with a memorable performance as Jesus in the 1972 production of Godspell, alongside a talented cast that included Eugene Levy and Gilda Radner. Over the years, Garber has appeared in numerous Broadway productions, earning four Tony Award nominations and starring in acclaimed shows such as Sweeney Todd and Art.

Personal Life

Garber has kept his personal life relatively private, publicly acknowledging his homosexuality in 2012. He has been in a long-term relationship with Canadian artist Rainer Andreesen since 2000, and they married in 2015. Garber is also known for his close friendship with actress Jennifer Garner, having officiated her wedding to Ben Affleck. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2022.
