Ville Valo

Early Life

Ville Hermanni Valo was born on November 22, 1976, in Helsinki, Finland, to a Hungarian mother and a Finnish father. His mother, Anita, worked as a shoe saleswoman and later for the city of Helsinki, while his father, Kari, was a taxi driver who eventually opened a sex shop. Valo grew up in a musically inclined household, with early influences from Finnish folk artists and rock bands like Kiss, which sparked his passion for music at a young age. He began playing bass guitar in school and formed his first band, B.L.O.O.D., during his early teenage years.

Career

In 1991, Valo co-founded the band His Infernal Majesty, which later became known as HIM. The band released their debut album, "Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666," in 1997, marking the beginning of their rise in the gothic rock scene. HIM achieved significant success with albums like "Razorblade Romance" and "Dark Light," the latter making them the first Finnish band to earn a gold record in the United States. Valo's distinctive baritone voice and charismatic stage presence contributed to HIM's popularity, and he became known for his unique blend of melodic rock and gothic themes, coining the term "love metal" to describe their sound.

Personal Life

Valo has lived in Helsinki and owned a historic tower house in Munkkiniemi until 2015. He has had several high-profile relationships, including an engagement to television host Jonna Nygrén, and has been linked to various models over the years. A vegetarian since his teens, Valo has expressed a disinterest in narcotics, citing alcohol and cigarettes as his only vices. His artistic influences range from literature to music, with a focus on themes of love and relationships in his songwriting. Valo's contributions to music have earned him accolades, including the Finnish National Prize, solidifying his legacy in the rock genre.
