Walter Huston

Early Life

Walter Thomas Huston was born on April 6, 1883, in Toronto, Ontario, to Elizabeth and Robert Moore Huston, a farmer and construction company founder. Growing up in a family of Scottish and Irish descent, he had a brother and two sisters, one of whom was the theatrical voice coach Margaret Carrington. Huston attended Winchester Street Public School and later worked in construction while nurturing his passion for acting at the Shaw School of Acting. He made his stage debut in 1902 and toured in various plays, including In Convict Stripes and The Sign of the Cross. In 1904, he married Rhea Gore, a sports editor, but left acting to manage electric power stations in Missouri until 1909.

Career

Huston's acting career resumed in 1909, and he began performing in vaudeville with actress Bayonne Whipple. After divorcing Rhea in 1913, he continued to build his career on Broadway, debuting in Mr. Pitt in 1924 and starring in productions like Desire Under the Elms and Kongo. With the advent of sound films, he transitioned to Hollywood, gaining fame for roles in The Virginian (1929) and Rain (1932). His son, John Huston, would later direct him to an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Legacy

Walter Huston passed away in 1950, leaving behind a rich legacy in the entertainment industry. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. His contributions to film and theater continue to be celebrated, and in 1998, John Weld published a biography titled September Song—An Intimate Biography of Walter Huston, further cementing his impact on the arts.
