Wesley Snipes

Early Life

Wesley Trent Snipes was born on July 31, 1962, in Orlando, Florida, to Wesley Rudolph Snipes, an aircraft engineer, and Marian Long, a teacher's assistant. Growing up in The Bronx, New York City, he was one of five children. Snipes attended the High School of Performing Arts at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School but returned to Florida before graduating. He later graduated from Jones High School in Orlando and pursued a bachelor's degree in fine arts at the State University of New York at Purchase, also attending Southwestern College in California.

Career

Snipes began his acting career at the age of 23 when he was discovered during a performance competition. He made his film debut in the 1986 comedy "Wildcats" and gained further recognition with a role in the iconic music video "Bad" directed by Martin Scorsese. His collaboration with director Spike Lee in films like "Mo' Better Blues" and "Jungle Fever" solidified his status as a leading actor in Hollywood. Snipes is best known for his roles in action films, with a career that has grossed over $3.6 billion worldwide. He received critical acclaim, winning the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his performance in "One Night Stand" (1997) and earning a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male for "The Waterdance" (1992).

Personal Life

A martial arts enthusiast, Snipes began training at the age of 12 and holds a 5th degree black belt in Shotokan karate. He was raised a Christian but converted to Islam in 1978, later returning to Christianity in 1988. Snipes has been married twice, first to April Dubois, with whom he has a son, and later to painter Nakyung Park, with whom he has four children. Notably, his apartment was destroyed during the September 11 attacks in 2001 while he was on the West Coast.
