Wham!

Formation

Wham! was formed in 1981 by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, who met at Bushey Meads School in Hertfordshire. Initially, they performed in a ska band called the Executive, but after its disbandment, they decided to create a duo that would capture their energetic friendship. The name "Wham!" was chosen to reflect their vibrant style, with the exclamation mark added by the graphic design studio Stylorouge to emphasize their fun and boisterous nature.

Breakthrough

The duo quickly gained traction in the music industry, signing with Innervision Records and releasing their debut album, "Fantastic," in 1983. Their infectious pop sound, characterized by hits like "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Last Christmas," propelled them to international fame. By the mid-1980s, Wham! had sold over 30 million records worldwide, becoming one of the most successful pop acts of the decade. Their music was pivotal during the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US, with several singles topping the Billboard Hot 100.

Disbandment and Legacy

Wham! disbanded in 1986, but their influence continued to resonate in the music world. George Michael pursued a successful solo career, while Ridgeley remained a supportive figure. The duo's legacy is marked by their memorable hits and charitable contributions, particularly with "Last Christmas," which has become a holiday classic. In 1997, a greatest hits album was released, and their impact was further celebrated with various tributes, including a Wham!-themed episode on The X Factor in 2009. Michael's untimely death in 2016 was a significant loss, but his contributions to music were honored posthumously with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
