Formation

Whitesnake was formed in London in 1978 by David Coverdale, who had recently departed from the iconic rock band Deep Purple. Initially conceived as a backing band for Coverdale, the group quickly evolved into a distinct entity. The original lineup included guitarist Micky Moody, bassist Neil Murray, drummer Dave Dowle, and keyboardist Brian Johnston, with Bernie Marsden joining as a second guitarist shortly thereafter. Their first performance took place at Lincoln Technical College on March 3, 1978.

Breakthrough and Key Releases

Whitesnake's early sound was a blend of blues rock and hard rock, heavily influenced by artists like The Allman Brothers Band and Cream. Their debut album, "Trouble," was released in 1978, followed by a series of successful albums including "Lovehunter," "Ready an’ Willing," and "Come an’ Get It." The band saw significant lineup changes over the years, with notable members such as Jon Lord, Cozy Powell, and John Sykes contributing to their evolving sound. The 1987 self-titled album marked a commercial peak, featuring hits like "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love."

Legacy and Disbandment

Whitesnake continued to release music and tour until their disbandment in 2022. Throughout their career, they became known for their powerful ballads and energetic rock anthems, solidifying their place in rock history. David Coverdale remained the only constant member, guiding the band through various musical eras and lineup changes, ultimately leaving a lasting legacy in the hard rock genre.
