Early Life

Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Müller was born on October 7, 1794, in Dessau, Germany, as the son of a tailor. He pursued a distinguished academic career, receiving his education at a local gymnasium before attending the University of Berlin, where he specialized in philological and historical studies. His early life was marked by a commitment to education and the arts, which would later influence his poetic career.

Career

Müller's career as a poet flourished in the early 19th century, with his most notable works being the lyric poems "Die schöne Müllerin" (1821) and "Winterreise" (1823). These collections would later inspire two significant song cycles composed by Franz Schubert, cementing his legacy in the world of music. In addition to his poetry, Müller was appointed as a teacher of classics at the Gelehrtenschule in Dessau in 1819 and became the librarian of the ducal library in 1820, where he remained until his untimely death.

Legacy

Despite his short life, which ended at the age of 32 due to a heart attack, Müller's influence on music and poetry was profound. His popular and political songs attracted the attention of great composers, particularly Schubert, who set many of Müller's poems to music. His work also inspired later writers, including Heinrich Heine and Andrés Neuman, who drew from Müller's themes in their own creations.
