William Herschel

Early Life

Frederick William Herschel was born on November 15, 1738, in the Electorate of Hanover, Germany, into a family of German Lutheran ancestry. He was one of ten children of Isaak Herschel, an oboist in the Hanover Military Band, and Anna Ilse Moritzen. Following in his father's footsteps, Herschel became an oboist himself. In 1755, he joined the Hanoverian Guards regiment, which was later ordered to England. However, after the regiment was recalled to defend Hanover, Herschel and his brother sought refuge in England in late 1757. At the age of 19, he anglicized his name to Frederick William Herschel.

Musical Career

In England, Herschel quickly adapted to his new surroundings and continued to develop his musical talents. He played the oboe, violin, harpsichord, and later the organ. Throughout his career, he composed numerous works, including 24 symphonies and various concertos, as well as church music. His notable compositions include the album "William Herschel: 24 Violin Capricci (1763) - World Premiere Recording" and several symphonies that have been recorded.

Personal Life and Legacy

On May 8, 1788, Herschel married Mary Pitt, a widow, and they had one son, John, born in 1792. His contributions to both music and astronomy were significant; he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and received several prestigious awards, including the Copley Medal and the Royal Order of the Welfs. Herschel became a British citizen in 1793 and was later honored with the title 'Sir' in 1816. He passed away on August 25, 1822, at Observatory House in Slough, leaving behind a legacy that intertwined the worlds of music and science, influencing future generations of astronomers and musicians alike.
