Early Life

Wyclef Jean, born Nelust Wyclef Jean on October 17, 1969, in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, emigrated to the United States at the age of nine. Settling in Brooklyn, New York, and later in East Orange and Newark, New Jersey, he began his musical journey as a child. His mother recognized his talent and gifted him a guitar, which he used to earn respect in his community. Influenced by reggae artist Bigga Haitian and local musicians, Wyclef graduated from Vailsburg High School and briefly attended Five Towns College before enrolling at the Berklee College of Music in 2009.

Career

Wyclef's music career took off in the 1980s when he formed the group Tranzlator Crew, which later became known as the Fugees. Alongside Lauryn Hill and Pras, he achieved fame with their second album, "The Score," released in 1996, which became one of the best-selling albums of all time. Following the group's breakup in 1997, Wyclef launched a successful solo career with his debut album, "Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival," featuring hits like "Gone Till November" and "We Trying to Stay Alive." Over the years, he has released numerous albums, including "The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book" and "Carnival III: The Fall and Rise of a Refugee."

Personal Life

Wyclef Jean's personal life has been marked by his relationship with Lauryn Hill and his marriage to Marie Claudinette in 1994, with whom he has a daughter, Angelina. He published his memoir, "Purpose: An Immigrant's Story," in 2012, detailing his challenging childhood in Haiti and his rise in the music industry. His contributions to music and humanitarian efforts have earned him several accolades, including the Grand Officer of the National Order of Honor and Merit from the Haitian government and induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2016.
