Formation

X JAPAN, originally named "X," was formed in 1982 in Chiba, Japan, by drummer and pianist Yoshiki and lead vocalist Toshi. The band began its journey as a power/speed metal group, quickly gaining attention in the Tokyo music scene. Their early lineup included members TOMO and 泉沢裕二 on guitar, and they released their first single, "I'll Kill You," in 1985. The band struggled to fit into the underground punk movement due to their commercial sound and flamboyant style, which would later define the visual kei genre.

Breakthrough and Evolution

In 1986, Yoshiki established Extasy Records to ensure a steady release of their music. The band saw significant lineup changes, with notable members like Taiji and hide joining in the late 1980s. X JAPAN's music evolved to incorporate symphonic elements, leading to iconic albums such as "BLUE BLOOD" and "ART OF LIFE." Their sound transitioned from heavy metal to a more progressive style, characterized by emotional ballads and orchestrated compositions. The band's influence grew, and they became one of the first Japanese acts to achieve mainstream success while on an independent label.

Legacy

X JAPAN is credited as a pioneer of the visual kei movement, which blends music with elaborate visual aesthetics. Their slogan, "Psychedelic Violence Crime of Visual Shock," encapsulated their artistic vision. After disbanding in 1997 following the tragic death of guitarist hide, the band reunited in 2007, continuing to influence a new generation of musicians. Their legacy endures, inspiring countless artists within and beyond the visual kei genre, solidifying their status as icons in Japanese rock music.
