Early Life

Yanni, born Yiannis Chrysomallis on November 14, 1954, in Kalamata, Greece, showed an early affinity for music, learning to play the piano at just six years old. His parents, Sotiri and Felitsa, encouraged his musical exploration without formal training, allowing him to develop a unique style that he still employs today. Alongside his musical talents, Yanni excelled in sports, setting a national record in swimming at age 14. In 1972, he moved to the United States to study psychology at the University of Minnesota, where he worked various jobs, including washing dishes, to support himself while pursuing his passion for music.

Career

Yanni's music career began in earnest in 1977 when he joined the Minneapolis-based rock group Chameleon. He recorded his first album, "Optimystique," in 1980, which was later re-released by Atlantic Records. By the late 1980s, Yanni had formed a band and began touring, gaining significant recognition for his performances, particularly with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. His unique blend of instrumental and new age music resonated with audiences, leading to a series of successful albums, including "Keys to Imagination" and "Out of Silence." Yanni's music, characterized by its eclectic influences from around the world, has been featured in various media, including television shows and sporting events.
