Early Life

Yasiin Bey, born on December 11, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York City, is the son of Sheron Smith and Abdulrahman Smith. As the eldest of 12 siblings, he was raised primarily by his mother while his father lived in New Jersey. His father was initially part of the Nation of Islam before transitioning to mainstream Sunni Islam, a faith that Bey was introduced to at the age of 13. Growing up during the crack epidemic, Bey witnessed significant social issues, including gang violence and poverty, which he largely avoided by engaging in theater and arts programs. A traumatic childhood event involved his younger brother being hit by a car, which deeply affected him and influenced his artistic expression.

Music Career

Bey's music career began in 1994 when he formed the group Urban Thermo Dynamics with his brother and a friend. He gained prominence as a solo artist in 1996 and released his first single, "Universal Magnetic," in 1997. Signing with Rawkus Records, he formed the influential rap duo Black Star with Talib Kweli, releasing their self-titled album in 1998. Bey's solo debut, "Black on Both Sides," was released in 1999, featuring the hit single "Ms. Fat Booty." Over the years, he has released several acclaimed albums, including "The New Danger" and "The Ecstatic," solidifying his status in the conscious hip-hop genre.

Before his music career, Bey was a child actor, appearing in various television shows and films.
