Early Life

Zohran Kwame Mamdani, known in the music world as Young Cardamom, was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda. He is the only child of renowned academic Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair. His multicultural upbringing was shaped by his Indian heritage, with his father being a Gujarati Muslim and his mother a Punjabi Hindu. At the age of five, Mamdani's family relocated to Cape Town, South Africa, where he experienced the stark realities of inequality during the post-apartheid era. By the age of seven, they moved to New York City, where he was raised in the vibrant Morningside Heights neighborhood.

Career

Mamdani's passion for music blossomed during his early career, particularly in hip-hop and rap. Under the moniker Young Cardamom, he collaborated with Ugandan rapper HAB, creating a unique sound that blended various languages, including Nubi, Luganda, Swahili, and English. Their debut song, "Kanda [Chap Chap]," celebrated the chapati, a staple food that symbolizes cultural fusion. The duo's EP, "Sidda Mukyaalo," released in 2016, addressed social issues in Uganda, earning them a nomination for "Rookie of the Year" at the Ugandan Hip Hop Awards. Mamdani also contributed to the soundtrack of his mother's film, "Queen of Katwe," showcasing his versatility as a musician and producer.

Personal Life

Mamdani is a dual citizen of Uganda and the United States, having been naturalized in 2018. He follows the Twelver branch of Shia Islam and is fluent in multiple languages, including Hindi and Arabic. In 2021, he met animator Rama Duwaji, and they became engaged in 2024, culminating in a series of wedding ceremonies in Dubai and New York City. Mamdani is also an avid sports fan, supporting teams like Arsenal and the New York Knicks, and he has a keen interest in cricket and professional wrestling. His diverse background and experiences continue to influence his artistic endeavors and public life.
