Early Life

Ramphueng Chithan, known professionally as Pumpuang Duangjan, was born in Thailand to poor farmers. Her early life was marked by hardship, as she received only two years of primary education before her family's financial struggles forced her to work as a sugar cane cutter. Despite being illiterate, Pumpuang had a remarkable ability to memorize song lyrics and participated in numerous local singing competitions, showcasing her natural talent.

Career

At the age of 15, Pumpuang caught the attention of a visiting band, Waiphot Phetsuphan, which marked the beginning of her rise to fame in the late 1970s. She became known as the "Queen of Luk Thung," a genre of Thai country music, and her songs often reflected the lives of Thailand's rural poor. Pumpuang was innovative in her approach, adapting traditional pleng luk thung into a more modern, dance-ready style known as electronic luk thung. Despite her immense popularity and the love of millions of fans, her career was marred by exploitation from lovers, managers, and promoters, which ultimately deprived her of her earnings.

Legacy

Pumpuang's life was tragically cut short when she succumbed to lupus at the young age of 30, a condition that she could not afford to treat due to financial mismanagement. Her legacy endures, as she was honored with a Google Doodle in 2018 on what would have been her 57th birthday. In Thailand, lupus is colloquially known as 'Phumpuang's disease,' highlighting the impact of her story on public awareness of the illness.
