Formation

I-dle, formerly known as (G)I-dle, is a South Korean girl group formed by Cube Entertainment on May 2, 2018. The group originally debuted as a sextet, consisting of members Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, Shuhua, and Soojin. However, Soojin departed from the group on August 14, 2021, leaving the current lineup as a quintet. The name "I-dle" was inspired by Soyeon's composition of the song "Idle Song" and was finalized after internal discussions within the agency. The name reflects individuality and the diverse personalities of the members, with the group being recognized for their self-producing capabilities and unique concepts.

Breakthrough

I-dle quickly gained popularity, receiving their first music show win on SBS MTV's The Show with their debut single "Latata" on May 22, 2018. They were celebrated for their musicality and versatility, breaking stereotypes associated with female idols. The group has released several successful albums and EPs, including "I NEVER DIE," "We are i-dle," and multiple EPs such as "I am" and "Oh my god." Their music spans various genres, including K-pop, electronic dance music, hip-hop, and contemporary R&B, showcasing their artistic range.

Legacy

I-dle has been recognized as one of the most successful girl groups outside of the major South Korean record labels, earning numerous awards and nominations, including seven rookie awards in their debut year. Their influence extends beyond music, as they have cultivated a strong fanbase known as "Neverland," with a significant female following. The group continues to push boundaries in the K-pop industry, establishing themselves as independent artists and musicians who actively participate in the creation of their music and concepts.
