Early Life

Gaita-Lurdes Klaverivna Essami, known professionally as Gaitana, was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, to a Ukrainian mother and a father from the Republic of the Congo. When she was just an infant, her family moved to Brazzaville, where they lived for five years before returning to Ukraine in 1985. Upon her return, Gaitana faced the challenge of adapting to a new culture, as she could only speak French and Lingala. However, she quickly learned Ukrainian and Russian. Gaitana's early life was marked by her passion for music and sports; she attended a music school where she learned the saxophone and was also a champion table tennis player.

Music Career

Gaitana began her professional music career in 2003 with the release of her debut album "O tebe." Over the years, she has released several albums, including "Slidom za toboyu" and "Voodoo Man," showcasing her diverse musical style that blends pop, jazz, funk, and folk-pop. In 2012, she represented Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest with her song "Be My Guest," where she placed 15th. Despite facing racial discrimination from some political figures in Ukraine, Gaitana remained a proud representative of her country, emphasizing her love for Ukraine and advocating for acceptance of non-white Ukrainians.

Legacy

Gaitana's contributions to music have earned her several accolades, including the Best Female Singer at the Ukrainian Music Awards in 2008. Her work not only highlights her artistic talent but also her resilience in the face of adversity, making her a significant figure in the Ukrainian music scene and a role model for many.
