Early Life

Yuliya Samoylova, born on April 7, 1989, in Ukhta, Komi ASSR, Russian SFSR, USSR, faced significant challenges from a young age due to spinal muscular atrophy, which resulted in her using a wheelchair throughout her life. Despite this, she began her artistic journey by performing for oil workers in her hometown. In 2008, she founded the band "TerraNova," which played heavy alternative music, although the band disbanded in 2010.

Career

Yuliya's breakthrough came in 2013 when she was the runner-up on the Russian version of The X Factor, Faktor A. Her career took a significant turn when she was selected to represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with her song "Flame Is Burning." However, her participation was marred by controversy as she was banned from entering Ukraine due to her previous visit to Crimea, leading to Russia's withdrawal from the contest. In 2018, she returned to Eurovision, performing "I Won't Break" in Lisbon, where she placed 15th in the semi-finals, marking the first time a Russian entry did not qualify for the grand final since the introduction of semi-finals in 2004.

Throughout her career, Yuliya has received recognition for her talent, including the prestigious Alla's Golden Star award. She continues to be a prominent figure in the Russian music scene, known for her contributions to the genres of estrada, pop rock, and indie pop, and is signed under the record label ONErpm.
