Early Life

Albert Leornes Greene, known as Al Green, was born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas, as the sixth of ten children to Cora Lee and Robert G. Greene Jr., a sharecropper. His musical journey began at a young age, performing with his sister in a group called the Greene Brothers. After relocating to Grand Rapids, Michigan, during his teenage years, Green faced challenges at home due to his passion for music, particularly after being caught listening to Jackie Wilson. Despite these obstacles, he formed a vocal group, Al Greene & the Creations, and later recorded the hit song "Back Up Train" with Al Greene & the Soul Mates in 1966.

Career

Al Green's career took off when he signed with Hi Records in 1969, where he worked with producer Willie Mitchell, who helped him develop his unique sound. His first album, "Green Is Blues," was released in 1969, but it was his subsequent albums that solidified his status as a soul music icon. Hits like "Let's Stay Together" and "I'm Still in Love with You" showcased his smooth vocals and emotional depth, earning him multiple gold records and Grammy Awards. Green's music often blended soul with rhythm and blues, and he became known for his passionate performances and heartfelt lyrics.

Personal Life

Green's personal life has been marked by both tragedy and transformation. In 1974, a violent incident involving his girlfriend led him to reassess his life, prompting him to become an ordained pastor and focus on gospel music. He established the Full Gospel Tabernacle church in Memphis in 1976 and has continued to preach while maintaining his music career. Green's legacy is further highlighted by numerous accolades, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, reflecting his profound impact on the music industry and culture.
