Early Life

Alwin Lopez Jarreau was born on March 12, 1940, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the fifth of six children. His father, Emile Alphonse Jarreau, was a Seventh-day Adventist Church minister and singer, while his mother, Pearl Walker Jarreau, served as a church pianist. Growing up, Al and his family often performed together in church concerts, which laid the foundation for his musical career. He was an active student, serving as student council president and even being elected governor at Badger Boys State. Jarreau graduated from Lincoln High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Ripon College in 1962, followed by a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa in 1964.

Career

Jarreau's professional music career began in 1968 when he made jazz his primary focus. He gained early exposure through performances at various clubs and television appearances, including shows hosted by Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin. His big break came in 1975 with the release of his debut album, "We Got By," which garnered critical acclaim and won him an Echo Award. His subsequent album, "Glow," further solidified his reputation. Jarreau's 1981 album, "Breakin' Away," became one of his most commercially successful works, featuring the hit song "We're in This Love Together" and earning him a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Personal Life

Al Jarreau was married twice; his first marriage to Phyllis Hall lasted from 1964 until their divorce in 1968. He later married Susan Elaine Player in 1977, with whom he had a son, Ryan Jarreau. Susan contributed to his music career as a background vocalist and photographer for several of his albums. Jarreau's personal life was intertwined with his music, as he often drew inspiration from his experiences and relationships.
