Sade

Formation

Sade, the iconic British band, was formed in London in 1982 by members of the Latin soul band Pride. The original lineup consisted of Sade Adu (lead vocals), Paul Denman (bass), Stuart Matthewman (saxophone and guitar), and Paul Cooke (drums). They made their debut performance at Ronnie Scott's Club in December 1982, quickly gaining attention and performing their first U.S. show at Danceteria in New York City in May 1983. Andrew Hale joined the group on keyboards in mid-1983, and Cooke was replaced by Dave Early on drums in early 1984.

Breakthrough

Sade's breakthrough came with the release of their first single, "Your Love Is King," in February 1984, which became a Top Ten hit. Their debut album, "Diamond Life," was released in July 1984, peaking at No. 2 on the UK charts and earning a 4× platinum certification. The album won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1985 and solidified Sade's place in the music industry. Over the years, they released several successful albums, including "Promise," "Stronger Than Pride," "Love Deluxe," "Lovers Rock," and "Soldier of Love."

Legacy

Sade is credited with influencing the neo-soul genre and achieving significant success in the 1980s with their unique blend of soul, pop, smooth jazz, and quiet storm. They were part of a new wave of British R&B artists and helped popularize the quiet storm genre globally. Their music has inspired numerous artists across various genres, including hip-hop and alternative rock, with notable mentions from artists like Rakim and Chino Moreno of Deftones. Sade continues to be celebrated for their sophisticated sound and enduring impact on the music landscape.
