His father, François, was a projectionist and later a cinema director, while his mother, Édith, worked as a pharmacy assistant and theater usher. After his parents divorced in 1939, Delon faced a tumultuous childhood, feeling like an outsider in his reconstructed family. He was eventually placed with a foster family, where he developed a passion for bicycle racing, dreaming of becoming a racer like Fausto Coppi. Following the death of his foster parents, he returned to live with his biological parents.
