Early Life

Alan Irwin Menken was born on July 22, 1949, in Manhattan, New York, to Judith and Norman Menken. His father was a boogie-woogie piano-playing dentist, while his mother was an actress, dancer, and playwright, providing a rich artistic environment for young Alan. Growing up in a Jewish family, Menken developed a passion for music early on, taking piano and violin lessons and composing original pieces by the age of nine. He attended New Rochelle High School and later graduated from New York University in 1972, where he initially pursued a pre-med track before fully committing to music.

Menken's career began in earnest after he joined the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, where he honed his skills as a composer.
