Behemoth

Formation

Behemoth is a Polish extreme metal band formed in 1991 in Gdańsk. The original lineup consisted of Nergal on lead guitar and vocals, Baal on drums, and Desecrator on rhythm guitar. They began their journey with several demos, the most notable being "...From the Pagan Vastlands" in 1994, which helped them gain recognition in the underground metal scene. Their debut studio album, "Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic)," was released in 1995, followed by their second album, "Grom," in 1996, which showcased a blend of various musical influences, including female vocals and acoustic elements.

Breakthrough

The band's third album, "Pandemonic Incantations," was released in 1998, marking a significant step in their evolution towards a more defined sound. However, it was the 1999 release of "Satanica" that solidified Behemoth's place in the blackened death metal genre, characterized by their aggressive style and philosophical lyrics. This album led to extensive touring across Europe, further establishing their reputation. Over the years, the lineup saw changes, with Baal leaving in 1996 and Inferno joining as the drummer in 1997, who later returned in 2000 after a brief hiatus.

Legacy

Behemoth has been influential in shaping the Polish extreme metal scene alongside bands like Vader and Hate. Their lyrical themes often explore anti-Christianity and occultism, and they are known for their theatrical live performances, complete with corpse paint and elaborate stage setups. With a discography that includes critically acclaimed albums such as "The Satanist" and "I Loved You at Your Darkest," Behemoth continues to push the boundaries of metal music, remaining a formidable force in the genre.
