Early Life

William Edward Crystal was born on March 14, 1948, in Manhattan, New York City, and raised in the Bronx before moving to Long Beach, New York. He grew up in a musical family; his father, Jack Crystal, owned a music store and was a jazz promoter, which exposed Billy to jazz legends like Billie Holiday and Pee Wee Russell from a young age. Crystal's Jewish heritage and upbringing in a culturally rich environment influenced his comedic style, as he often entertained his family by mimicking famous comedians. After graduating from Long Beach High School in 1965, he attended Marshall University on a baseball scholarship.

Career

Crystal's career began in 1969 when he joined various improv troupes, eventually leading to performances at renowned venues like The Improv and Catch a Rising Star. He gained national recognition after appearing on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and became a familiar face on television with roles in shows like "Saturday Night Live" and "Soap."
