Biography
Early Life
Bob Weir was born on October 16, 1947, in San Francisco, California. He was given up for adoption by his biological mother and raised by his adoptive parents, Frederic and Eleanor Weir, in Atherton. Weir's early musical journey began at age 13 when he picked up the guitar after struggling with piano and trumpet. His school years were tumultuous due to undiagnosed dyslexia, leading to multiple expulsions from schools, including Menlo School and Fountain Valley School, where he met future Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow.
Career
Weir's musical career took off on New Year's Eve 1963 when he met Jerry Garcia at Dana Morgan's Music Store. The two formed a band that evolved from Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions to The Warlocks, and ultimately to the iconic Grateful Dead. As a founding member, Weir played rhythm guitar and contributed significantly to the band's vocal arrangements throughout their 30-year run. Despite facing challenges, including a temporary removal from the band in 1968, Weir's talent and dedication helped solidify the Grateful Dead's legacy in rock music. After the band's disbandment in 1995, he continued to perform with various groups, including Dead & Company, which he formed in 2015 with former bandmates and new collaborators.
Personal Life
Weir's personal life has been as colorful as his music career. He lived with Frankie Hart from 1969 to 1975, who inspired the song "Sugar Magnolia." In 1999, he married Natascha Münter, with whom he has two daughters. A long-time advocate for animal rights, Weir played a role in founding Farm Sanctuary. He also co-authored a children's book in 1991, showcasing his creative talents beyond music. Weir's contributions to music and his advocacy work have left a lasting impact on both his fans and the causes he supports.
