Bobby "Blue" Bland, born Robert Calvin Brooks on January 27, 1930, in Barretville, Tennessee, faced early challenges when his father abandoned the family shortly after his birth. He later adopted the surname "Bland" from his stepfather, Leroy Bridgeforth. Dropping out of school in the third grade to work in cotton fields, Bland's life took a pivotal turn when he moved to Memphis in 1947 with his mother. There, he began singing with local gospel groups and immersed himself in the vibrant music scene of Beale Street, mingling with future legends like B.B. King and Junior Parker.

Career

Bland's professional journey began in 1951 when talent scout Ike Turner recorded him for Modern Records. Despite his illiteracy, Bland's passion for music shone through, leading to the recording of his first song, "They Call It Stormy Monday," which would later become a hit in 1961. His early career saw him struggle with commercially unsuccessful singles, but his unique blend of gospel, blues, and R&B eventually caught the attention of Duke Records.
