He grew up in a musical family, with his father, Robert McFerrin, being the first African-American man to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, and his mother, Sara Copper, a voice teacher. McFerrin attended several educational institutions, including Cathedral High School in Los Angeles and California State University, Sacramento, where he honed his musical talents.
