Early Life

Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, known professionally as Cardi B, was born on October 11, 1992, in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. With a Dominican father and a Trinidadian mother, Cardi identifies as Afro-Caribbean and has often spoken about her cultural heritage. Raised in the Highbridge neighborhood of the South Bronx, she developed a thick accent and a strong sense of identity. Cardi attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology and worked various jobs, including a grocery store position, before becoming a dancer at a strip club. She credits stripping as a turning point in her life, allowing her to escape poverty and domestic violence while returning to school.

Career
