Curtis Mayfield

Early Life

Curtis Lee Mayfield was born on June 3, 1942, in Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Marion Washington and Kenneth Mayfield, and one of five children. After his father left when Curtis was just five years old, his mother moved the family through various public housing projects, eventually settling in Cabrini-Green. Mayfield's musical journey began early; he received his first guitar at age ten and was influenced by gospel music, which he learned from his mother. By age 14, he formed his first group, the Alphatones, and later joined The Roosters, which evolved into The Impressions.

Career

Mayfield's career took off in 1956 when he joined The Impressions, where he became the lead singer and primary songwriter. The group produced several hits, including "Gypsy Woman" and "People Get Ready," which became anthems of the civil rights movement. In 1968, he founded his own label, Curtom Records, and continued to create music that resonated with social issues. His work on the soundtrack for the film "Super Fly" solidified his status as a pioneer of socially conscious music. Mayfield's ability to blend soulful melodies with powerful messages made him a significant figure in the music industry.

Personal Life and Legacy

Mayfield was married twice and had ten children from three relationships. His life took a tragic turn in 1990 when he became paralyzed from the neck down due to an accident on stage. Despite this, he continued to compose and record music, demonstrating remarkable resilience. He received numerous accolades, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mayfield passed away on December 26, 1999, leaving behind a legacy as a musical innovator and a voice for social change.
