David Cross

Early Life

David Cross was born on April 4, 1964, in Roswell, Georgia, to Jewish parents Barry and Susi Cross. His father, an immigrant from Leeds, England, left the family when David was just 10 years old. Growing up, the family faced financial hardships, often moving between homes and living in motels. Despite these challenges, Cross developed a passion for comedy early on, which would shape his future career.

Career

Cross began his stand-up comedy journey at the age of 17, moving to New York City shortly after graduating from Northside High School. He initially struggled to find his footing in the comedy scene, but by the early 1990s, he became a prominent figure at the comedy club Catch a Rising Star, performing alongside notable comedians like Janeane Garofalo and Louis C.K. His unique style and perspective led to the creation of the influential HBO sketch series "Mr. Show with Bob and David" (1995–1998), which solidified his status in the comedy world. Cross is also known for his role as Tobias Fünke in the critically acclaimed sitcom "Arrested Development" and for voicing Ian Hawke in the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" films.

Personal Life

In 2012, Cross married actress Amber Tamblyn, and they welcomed a daughter in 2017. Raised in a Jewish household, he later identified as an atheist. An interesting facet of his life is his connection to the Beastie Boys; he is sampled in their song "Ch-Check It Out" and appeared in their music video for "Make Some Noise." Cross is also recognized for being the first investor in the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit alongside his comedic talents.
