Eddy Grant

Early Life

Edmond Montague Grant was born on March 5, 1948, in Plaisance, British Guiana (now Guyana). He later moved to Linden, where his father, Patrick, a trumpeter, played in a band called Nello and the Luckies. Grant, along with his younger brother Rudy, joined their parents in London in 1960, where they settled in the Kentish Town area. It was during his time at Acland Burghley Secondary Modern in Tufnell Park that he learned to read and write music, inspired by American musician Chuck Berry after witnessing a performance at the Finsbury Park Astoria.

Career

At just 16, Grant formed the Equals in 1964, one of the UK's first racially mixed bands, where he played lead guitar and provided background vocals. The Equals achieved significant success, with their most notable hit being "Baby, Come Back," which topped the UK Singles Chart in 1968 and again in 1994 when covered by Pato Banton. Grant's songwriting prowess extended beyond the Equals, as he produced for other artists and even started his own record label, Torpedo. After suffering a heart attack in 1971, he shifted his focus to production and opened his own studio, Coach House.

Musical Style

Eddy Grant is celebrated for his genre-blending style, which incorporates reggae rock, soca, pop, and elements from various musical traditions, including African polyrhythms and samba. He is credited with creating the musical genre known as ringbang, showcasing his innovative approach to music.

Personal Life and Legacy

Since 1982, Grant has resided in Barbados. His contributions to music have been recognized with numerous accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Guyanese government in 2016 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Guyana in 2018. He has also advocated for the teaching of calypso music in schools and the establishment of a calypso college in Barbados, further solidifying his legacy as a cultural ambassador.
