Early Life

Michael Peter Balzary, known professionally as Flea, was born on October 16, 1962, in Melbourne, Australia. He is of partial Hungarian and Irish descent. At the age of four, his family relocated to Rye, New York, due to his father's work at the Australian consulate. Flea's childhood was tumultuous, marked by his parents' divorce and a challenging home life with an aggressive stepfather. Despite these difficulties, he developed a passion for music, initially influenced by jazz legends like Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. His nickname, "Flea," originated from his restless nature during his teenage years.

Career

Flea is best known as the founding bassist of the iconic rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, which he formed in 1983 alongside vocalist Anthony Kiedis. The band gained fame for their unique blend of funk, punk, and rock, with Flea's innovative bass techniques playing a crucial role in their sound. Over the years, he has also collaborated with various artists and supergroups, including Atoms for Peace and Antemasque. His musical style has evolved, showcasing a range of techniques from slapping and popping to more traditional methods, earning him recognition as one of the greatest bassists in rock history.

Personal Life

Flea became a U.S. citizen as an adult and has been married twice, with three children. His first marriage was to Loesha Zeviar, with whom he shares a daughter, Clara. He later had a son, Sunny, with model Frankie Rayder. In 2019, he married fashion designer Melody Ehsani, expressing deep gratitude for their relationship.
