Formation

Foreigner is a British-American rock band formed in New York City in 1976. The band was founded by English guitarist Mick Jones, who had previously played with several bands, including the Leslie West Band. After relocating to New York, Jones began assembling a group of musicians, starting with keyboardist Al Greenwood and later adding drummer Dennis Elliott and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald. After auditioning numerous vocalists, Jones finally recruited Lou Gramm, whose powerful voice became a defining feature of the band's sound.

Breakthrough and Key Releases

The band's self-titled debut album, "Foreigner," was released in 1977, followed by the successful "Double Vision" in 1978. These albums established Foreigner as a major force in rock music, with hits like "Cold as Ice" and "Hot Blooded." Over the years, the lineup saw changes, including the departure of bassist Ed Gagliardi in 1979, replaced by Rick Wills. The band continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s, including "4" and "Agent Provocateur," solidifying their status as one of the best-selling bands of all time, with over 80 million records sold worldwide.
