Early Life

Georges Moustaki, born Giuseppe Mustacchi on May 3, 1934, in Alexandria, Egypt, was a Greek-French singer-songwriter of Jewish descent. His parents, Sarah and Nessim Mustacchi, were Francophile Greek Jews from the ancient Romaniote community, originally hailing from the Greek island of Corfu. They owned a bookshop in Alexandria, where young Giuseppe was immersed in a multicultural environment, learning French, Italian, and Arabic. His family's linguistic prowess influenced his artistic development, as he was exposed to various cultures and languages from an early age.

Career

At 17, Moustaki moved to Paris, where he initially worked as a door-to-door poetry book salesman. His passion for music blossomed in the vibrant nightlife of Paris, where he began performing in nightclubs. His big break came when he met the renowned singer-songwriter Georges Brassens, who became a mentor and introduced him to influential artists and intellectuals of the time. Moustaki's songwriting career took off when he began writing for Édith Piaf, one of France's most celebrated singers. His song "Milord" became a massive hit, reaching number one in Germany and solidifying his place in the French music scene.

Legacy

Throughout his career, Moustaki wrote approximately 300 songs for various artists, including Dalida, Françoise Hardy, and Yves Montand. His contributions to the genre of chanson earned him prestigious accolades, including the title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres and Knight of the Legion of Honour. Moustaki's music, characterized by its poetic lyrics and melodic charm, continues to resonate with audiences, reflecting his deep connection to his multicultural roots and the human experience. He passed away on May 23, 2013, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of music.
