Gigliola Cinquetti

Early Life

Gigliola Cinquetti was born on December 20, 1947, in Verona, Italy, to affluent parents, Luigi and Sara. She has a sister named Rosabianca and showed an early passion for music, studying piano and music theory from the ages of 9 to 13. Cinquetti also pursued her love for art, graduating from the Salerno art school and earning a teaching qualification. In 1979, she married Luciano Teodori, and together they have two children, Giovanni and Costantino.

Career

Cinquetti's musical journey began at the young age of 16 when she debuted at the Sanremo Music Festival in 1964, winning with her iconic song "Non ho l'età" ("I'm not old enough"). This victory allowed her to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest the same year, where she made history by becoming the youngest winner at that time. The song achieved remarkable success, selling over three million copies and earning a platinum disc. In 1966, she released another hit, "Dio, come ti amo" ("God, How I Love You").

Cinquetti's influence extended beyond Italy, with her song "Alle porte del sole" being re-recorded in English and reaching No. 17 on Billboard's Hot 100 in the United States. She returned to the Eurovision stage in 1974, showcasing her enduring talent and connection to the music scene. Throughout her career, Cinquetti has released numerous albums, including "Gigliola Cinquetti" and "Non ho l'età - The best of Gigliola Cinquetti," solidifying her status as a pop music icon in Italy and beyond.
