Early Life

Wouter André "Wally" De Backer, known professionally as Gotye, was born in Belgium in 1980 and immigrated to Australia with his family at the age of two. They initially settled in Sydney before moving to Montmorency, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. His mother affectionately nicknamed him "Gotye," derived from the French equivalent of his Flemish name, while his parents used the English name Walter for school. De Backer attended Parade College in Bundoora, where he served as school captain and developed a passion for music, learning instruments like the piano and drums. His teenage years were marked by a fascination with Depeche Mode, which inspired him to pursue a career in music.

Career Beginnings

In 2001, Gotye began recording his first tracks, primarily using samples, and released a four-track CD that included the song "Out Here in the Cold." He hand-crafted each copy and sent them to radio stations, receiving positive feedback that encouraged him to continue. During this time, he met Kris Schroeder, and together they formed the band The Basics, which allowed De Backer to perform live and hone his craft. Over the next few years, he released several more collections under the Gotye name, gaining recognition in the Australian music scene.

Breakthrough Success

Gotye's career reached new heights with the release of his 2011 single "Somebody That I Used to Know," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the best-selling songs of 2012. The song earned him multiple awards, including the Grammy for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. His album "Making Mirrors" also won Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammy Awards, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the music industry. Throughout his career, Gotye has been influenced by artists like DJ Shadow, Kate Bush, and Peter Gabriel, and he continues to create music that resonates with audiences worldwide.
