Early Life

Bae Joo-hyun, known by her stage name Irene (아이린), was born on March 29, 1991, in Daegu, South Korea. Growing up in Buk-gu, she was raised in a family that included her parents and a younger sibling. Irene attended Haknam High School in Daegu, where her passion for music began to flourish.

Career Beginnings

Irene joined SM Entertainment in 2009, where she trained for five years before debuting. During her trainee period, she made her first appearance in the music video for Henry Lau's song "1-4-3" in 2013. On December 9, 2013, she was introduced as part of SM Rookies, a pre-debut team, alongside notable future stars. Irene's official debut came on July 27, 2014, when she was introduced as the leader of the girl group Red Velvet, which quickly gained popularity with their debut single "Happiness." Since then, Red Velvet has released numerous EPs and albums, solidifying their status as one of the leading K-pop groups both in South Korea and internationally.

Solo Activities and Influence

In addition to her work with Red Velvet, Irene has also engaged in solo activities, including hosting the music show Music Bank from May 2015 to June 2016. Her influence extends beyond music; in 2018, her mention of the book "Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" led to a significant surge in its sales, showcasing her impact on popular culture. Irene has consistently ranked among the top female idols in South Korea, reflecting her popularity and the strong connection she has with fans.
