Janick Gers

Early Life

Janick Robert Gers was born on January 27, 1957, in Hartlepool, England, to a Polish father, Bolesław, who served in the Polish Navy during World War II, and a British mother, Lois. Growing up in a musical household, Janick was the eldest of four children and graduated from English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College in the 1970s. He later pursued a college degree in sociology and English literature after his time with the band Gillan in the 1980s.

Career

Gers began his musical journey as the lead guitarist for the new wave of British heavy metal band White Spirit, contributing to their self-titled debut album in 1980. He then joined Ian Gillan's band, where he made his television debut on Top of the Pops and recorded two albums before the group disbanded in 1982. After a brief stint with Gogmagog, he co-wrote and performed on tracks for former Marillion vocalist Fish's solo album. In 1990, he joined Iron Maiden, initially replacing Adrian Smith, and has remained a key member of the band, contributing to ten studio albums and performing with them until the present day. In 2026, Gers and Iron Maiden were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Janick Gers is known for his energetic stage presence and distinctive guitar style, characterized by heavy distortion and a raw tone. Outside of music, Janick lives in Yarm, Teesside, with his wife Sandra and their two children. His son Dylan is also a musician, exploring ambient post-rock. Janick has a deep connection to his Polish roots, having visited relatives in Poland during his youth and even purchasing his first guitar there. A fan of Hartlepool United, he holds a season ticket at their home ground and has made appearances in media, including a role in the BBC drama The Paradise Club.
