Jello Biafra

Early Life

Eric Reed Boucher, known professionally as Jello Biafra, was born on June 17, 1958, in Boulder, Colorado. He grew up in a family that encouraged his interest in international politics and music. His mother, Virginia, was a librarian, while his father, Stanley, was a psychiatric social worker and poet. Biafra's passion for rock music ignited when his parents accidentally tuned into a rock radio station. Despite his guidance counselor's advice to pursue a career as a dental hygienist, Biafra's artistic inclinations led him down a different path.

Musical Career

Biafra's musical journey began in 1977 when he worked as a road crew member for a local band called the Ravers, which later became known as The Nails. Inspired by the Ramones, he formed his first band, the Healers, shortly after high school, although they never performed live. In June 1978, he co-founded the influential punk band Dead Kennedys with guitarist East Bay Ray. As the lead singer and songwriter, Biafra became known for his provocative lyrics and satirical style, addressing political and social issues. The band released several iconic albums, including "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" and "Plastic Surgery Disasters," solidifying their place in punk rock history.

Personal Life

Biafra married Theresa Soder, known as Ninotchka, on October 31, 1981, in a unique ceremony held in a graveyard, officiated by a member of the punk band Flipper. The couple later divorced. Identifying as agnostic, Biafra discovered his Jewish ancestry in his mid-40s but does not consider himself Jewish due to his secular upbringing. In 2026, he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke but made a remarkable recovery, returning to the stage just months later. He currently resides in San Francisco, California, continuing to influence the punk scene and engage in political activism.
