Early Life and Career Beginnings

James Donald Root, known as Jim Root, is an American guitarist born in the United States. He began his musical journey in the early 1990s with the thrash metal band Atomic Opera from Iowa. After the band disbanded, he played in several other groups, including DeadFront and Stone Sour, which he joined in 1995. Root's early career was marked by various jobs, including working as a screenprinter, waiter, and busboy, while he honed his skills as a musician.

Rise to Fame with Slipknot

In January 1999, Jim Root joined the iconic nu metal band Slipknot, stepping in to replace original guitarist Josh Brainard. Initially hesitant about the offer, he was convinced to join after a conversation with a friend. Root's contributions to Slipknot began with the recording of their self-titled album, where he played on tracks like "Me Inside" and the now-classic "Purity." Over time, he evolved from a rhythm guitarist to a co-lead guitarist and became one of the band's primary songwriters, especially following the loss of bassist Paul Gray and the departure of drummer Joey Jordison.
