Joan Jett

Early Life

Joan Marie Larkin, known professionally as Joan Jett, was born on September 22, 1958, in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. Growing up in a Protestant family, she was the oldest of three children. Jett's musical journey began at the age of 13 when she received her first guitar. After her family moved to Rockville, Maryland, and later to West Covina, California, she embraced her passion for music, eventually changing her name to Joan Jett to create a more rock star persona.

Career

At just 16, Jett co-founded the iconic all-girl rock band, The Runaways, alongside drummer Sandy West and other notable members like Lita Ford and Cherie Currie. The band gained international fame, particularly in Japan, and produced several albums, including hits like "I Love Rock 'n' Roll". After the Runaways disbanded in 1979, Jett launched a successful solo career, releasing albums such as "Bad Reputation" and "The Hit List". Her signature white Gibson Melody Maker guitar became a symbol of her sound and style, and she has been recognized as a pioneering figure in rock music, often referred to as the "Godmother of Punk".

Legacy

Joan Jett's influence extends beyond her music; she is celebrated as a role model for the riot grrrl movement and has been dubbed the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll".
