Early Life
Johann Strauss II, also known as Johann Strauss Jr. or the "Walzerkönig" (Waltz King), was born on October 25, 1825, in St. Ulrich near Vienna, Austria. He was the son of composer Johann Strauss I and Maria Anna Streim. Despite his father's wishes for him to pursue a career in banking, Strauss Jr. secretly studied the violin with the first violinist of his father's orchestra, Franz Amon. His father discovered his musical ambitions and initially opposed them, but after abandoning the family for a mistress, Strauss Jr. was able to focus on his music with the support of his mother.
Career
Strauss II became one of the most celebrated composers of light music, particularly known for his waltzes and operettas. He composed over 500 pieces, including famous works like "The Blue Danube" and "Kaiser Walzer." His career took off as he toured extensively across Austria, Poland, and Germany, eventually becoming the Music Director of the Royal Court Balls in 1863. Despite facing a nervous breakdown in 1853, he continued to thrive, even performing in Russia annually from 1856 to 1865. His music became synonymous with Viennese culture, and he was known for his engaging performances.
Death and Legacy
Johann Strauss II passed away on June 3, 1899, in Vienna at the age of 73, after suffering from pleuropneumonia. He was buried in the Zentralfriedhof. His legacy endures through the annual Vienna New Year's Concert, where his music is celebrated worldwide. The Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester, formed in 1966, continues to honor his contributions to music, ensuring that his waltzes and operettas remain a vital part of the classical repertoire.

Johann Maria Eduard Strauss III was an Austrian composer whose father was Eduard Strauss, whose uncles were Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss, and whose grandfather was Johann Strauss I. Born in Vienna, he was unofficially entrusted with the task of upholding his family's tradition after the dissolution of the Strauss Orchestra by his father in 1901. His talents were not fully realized during his lifetime as musical tastes had changed in the Silver Age with more popular composers such as Franz Lehár and Oscar Straus dominating the Viennese musical scene with their operettas, although his uncle, Johann Strauss II, supervised his development as a musician, a fact disputed by Eduard Strauss.
