John Fogerty

Early Life

John Cameron Fogerty was born on May 28, 1945, in Berkeley, California, and grew up in El Cerrito as the third of five boys in an Irish-American family. His father, Galen Robert Fogerty, worked as a Linotype operator, while his mother, Edith Lucile, was a second-grade teacher. Fogerty's early education was marked by challenges, including a critical view of his Catholic school experience, which he recounted in his memoir, "Fortunate Son." After his parents divorced, he attended several schools, eventually meeting future Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) bandmates while at El Cerrito High School. Fogerty's passion for music blossomed during his youth, leading him to form a cover band called the Blue Velvets with bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford.

Career

Fogerty's career took off when he co-founded the swamp rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival in the late 1960s, serving as the lead singer, lead guitarist, and principal songwriter. CCR achieved remarkable success, with nine Top 10 singles and eight gold albums between 1968 and 1972, earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. After the band's disbandment, Fogerty embarked on a solo career, releasing his first album, "The Blue Ridge Rangers," in 1973, which included the hit "Jambalaya." He continued to produce successful albums throughout the years, including "Centerfield" and "Revival," showcasing his versatility across rock, country, and swamp rock genres.

Personal Life

Fogerty's personal life has seen its share of ups and downs. He married Martha Paiz in 1965, with whom he had three children, but they divorced in the late 1980s. In 1991, he married Julie Lebiedzinski, and they have three children together. Fogerty is also known for his political views, being a lifelong liberal Democrat who has critiqued various Republican figures through his music. Despite his political stance, he has attracted a diverse fan base, including high-profile conservatives. In 2023, he made headlines by purchasing a Hidden Hills estate from Sylvester Stallone for $17 million.
