Johnny Mathis

Early Life

John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935, in Gilmer, Texas, as the fourth of seven children to Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd, both of whom were domestic cooks. The family relocated to San Francisco when Mathis was five years old, where he grew up in the Richmond District. His father, a vaudeville singer and pianist, recognized Mathis's vocal talent early on and encouraged his musical pursuits by buying him an upright piano. Mathis began performing for family and friends, and at 13, he started formal voice lessons with Connie Cox, which he continued for six years. Alongside his musical talents, Mathis was also a star athlete in high school, excelling in high jumping and basketball.

Career

Mathis's professional career took off in the mid-1950s when he caught the attention of Helen Noga, co-founder of the Black Hawk Club in San Francisco. She became his manager and helped him secure a contract with Columbia Records after a successful performance at the 440 Club. His debut album, "Johnny Mathis: A New Sound In Popular Song," was released in 1956, but it was his subsequent albums that solidified his status as a pop and soul icon. Mathis became known for his smooth romantic ballads, with hits like "Wonderful! Wonderful!" and "It's Not for Me to Say." Over the years, he released numerous albums, many of which achieved gold or platinum status, and he became one of the best-selling recording artists of the 20th century.

Personal Life and Legacy

Beyond music, Mathis is an avid golfer and has hosted several charity golf tournaments. He has also published a cookbook and supported various charitable organizations. Despite facing personal challenges, including rehabilitation for alcoholism, Mathis has remained a beloved figure in the music industry. He has received numerous accolades, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame for several recordings. In 2014, he was honored with induction into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame, further cementing his legacy as a significant contributor to American music.
