Early Life

Kim Jong-hyun, known mononymously as Jonghyun, was born in Seoul, South Korea, where he grew up with an older sister. His family faced financial difficulties during his school years, receiving welfare support. Jonghyun's passion for music ignited in middle school when he joined a school band, inspired by Japanese rock star Yoshiki and his band X Japan. He attended Seoul Music High School but dropped out in the 10th grade to pursue a music career, later graduating from Chungwoon University with a degree in Applied Music and earning a master's degree in film and musical studies from Myongji University.

Career

Jonghyun was scouted by SM Entertainment at the age of 15 after showcasing his talent at a school song festival. He debuted as a member of the boy band SHINee on May 25, 2008, and quickly became known for his vocal prowess. Over his nine-year career with SHINee, he contributed to the group as a songwriter, penning lyrics for hits like "Juliette." Jonghyun also participated in the project group SM the Ballad, releasing two EPs. His solo work included several albums, such as "Poet ᛁ Artist" and "소품집 : 이야기 Op.1," showcasing his versatility across genres like K-pop, contemporary R&B, and ballads.

Jonghyun's personal life was marked by a high-profile relationship with actress Shin Se-kyung, which drew significant media attention. He was also known for his advocacy on social issues, notably supporting LGBTQ rights. His legacy in the K-pop industry is profound; he was one of the first artists at SM Entertainment to take significant control over his music production, earning recognition for his songwriting and artistic contributions. Jonghyun is remembered as a unique talent who transcended the typical idol mold, leaving a lasting impact on the music scene.
