Early Life

Joshua Winslow Groban was born on February 27, 1981, in Los Angeles, California, to Jack Groban, a businessman, and Melinda "Lindy" Groban, a school teacher. His father, a descendant of Jewish immigrants from Poland and Ukraine, converted to Christianity upon marrying Melinda, whose ancestry includes English, German, Norwegian, and Ashkenazi Jewish roots. Groban's musical journey began in the seventh grade when he sang a solo at a school cabaret night. Initially focused on acting, he played Tevye in his high school's production of "Fiddler on the Roof" and attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts Camp, where he majored in musical theater. He graduated from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts in 1999 and briefly attended Carnegie Mellon University before leaving to pursue a singing career.

Career

Groban's career took off in late 1997 when he was introduced to producer David Foster. He gained initial fame as a rehearsal singer for high-profile events, including the Grammy Awards, where he stood in for Andrea Bocelli. His performance led to a guest role on the television show "Ally McBeal," where he sang the popular song "You're Still You." His self-titled debut album was released in November 2001, and he quickly became a best-selling artist, with over 25 million records sold worldwide as of 2022.
