Early Life

Josquin des Prez, born around 1450 in what is now northeastern France or Belgium, is one of the most significant composers of the Renaissance. His early life remains shrouded in mystery, with little known about his family background. His father, Gossart dit des Prez, was a policeman who faced various accusations and disappeared from records by 1448. Josquin's mother is also absent from historical documents, leading to speculation about her status. After the death of his father, Josquin was named heir by his uncle and aunt, Gille Lebloitte dit des Prez and Jacque Banestonne, around 1466.

Career

Josquin's career flourished as he became a central figure in the Franco-Flemish School of music. He is celebrated for his innovative approach to polyphony, emphasizing the relationship between text and music. His compositions, primarily vocal, include masses, motets, and secular chansons. Notable works include the "Missa Pange Lingua" and the "Missa L'Homme Armé," which showcase his mastery of complex, expressive musical styles.
