Formation

Journey is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1973 by former members of Santana, the Steve Miller Band, and Frumious Bandersnatch. Originally called the Golden Gate Rhythm Section, the band was intended to serve as a backup group for established Bay Area artists. The original lineup included Neal Schon on lead guitar, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and lead vocals, Ross Valory on bass, George Tickner on rhythm guitar, and Prairie Prince on drums. After their first performance in Hawaii, they quickly abandoned the backup concept and developed a distinctive jazz fusion style, eventually adopting the name "Journey".

Breakthrough and Key Releases

Journey's first public appearance was at the Winterland Ballroom on New Year's Eve 1973, followed by a performance at the Diamond Head Crater in Hawaii. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1975, followed by several others, including "Look Into the Future" and "Next". Their breakthrough came with the album "Infinity" in 1978, which featured the iconic lead vocals of Steve Perry, who joined the band that same year. This marked the beginning of a successful era for Journey, characterized by hits like "Don't Stop Believin'" and albums such as "Escape" and "Frontiers".

Lineup Changes and Legacy

Throughout the years, Journey has seen numerous lineup changes. Key members included Aynsley Dunbar, who played drums until 1978, and Jonathan Cain, who joined in 1980 and contributed to the band's signature sound. After a hiatus in the late 1990s, Journey reformed with new lead vocalist Arnel Pineda in 2007, revitalizing their career. The band has been recognized with numerous accolades, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, solidifying their legacy as one of America's most beloved rock bands.
