Early Life

Julie London, born Julie Peck on September 26, 1926, in Santa Rosa, California, was the only child of vaudeville performers Josephine and Jack Peck. The family relocated to San Bernardino when she was just three, where she made her singing debut on her parents' radio show. Growing up, London admired Billie Holiday and was described as a shy child with little self-confidence. In 1941, her family moved to Hollywood, where she began singing in local nightclubs and graduated from the Hollywood Professional School in 1945.

Career

London's career took off after she met talent agent Sue Carol in 1943, leading to a screen test and a contract with a film studio. She made her film debut in 1944 and gained recognition as a pin-up girl during World War II. After a series of roles, she signed with Warner Bros. and starred in several films, including "The Red House" and "The Fat Man." In the mid-1950s, London shifted her focus to music, releasing her debut album "Julie Is Her Name" in 1955, which featured her iconic rendition of "Cry Me a River," later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Artistry and Legacy

Known for her sultry contralto voice, London became a prominent torch singer, recording over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards until 1969. Critics praised her intimate style, often characterized by sparse arrangements. As her career evolved, she incorporated more elaborate instrumentation into her music. London was also recognized for her acting, earning a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the TV series "Emergency!" She left a lasting impact on both music and film, celebrated for her unique artistry and contributions to the jazz genre.
